Miguel Rivera (Anthony Gonzalez), 12, lives in a Mexican village. He comes from a long line of shoemakers who hate music because decades earlier, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife Imelda and their children in order to follow his dream of becoming a famous performer.

The boy hates the idea of becoming a shoemaker. Instead, he idolizes late movie star/musician Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt) and wants to be a musician, like his idol. 

While trying to borrow a guitar so he can enter a talent competition, Miguel discovers an link between himself and Ernesto and accidentally enters the Land of the Dead. There, along with his stray dog, Dante, he meets his ancestors, whose photos have been placed on a table in Miguel's family home so that their souls can return to the living for a day.

Miguel, who wants to earn his family’s blessing to play music — discovers a family secret and is desperate to return to the Land of the Living — but that may not be as easy as he thought.

Mrs. Walker asks the old man (Edmund Gwenn) who discovered the man was drunk to stand in as Santa, and then recruits him as the store Santa at Macy's Department store for the holiday season.

Although the public loves him, it turns out that the man calls himself Kris Kringle and really believes he is Santa. Soon he has Susan, who was told by her mother that Santa doesn't really exist, believing in him.

When something happens to Jackson, Israel is forced to handle the cases. The loss of his partner leads to many changes around the firm and Israel finds himself in a world completely foreign to him. In an attempt to get back to his roots as a young activist, he tries to help a non-profit, but learns he’s out of touch with the issues youth now face. This realization brings him into a world darker than he expected.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

In 1843, dealing with the failure of his last three books, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) is once again rejected by his publishers. As he grows deeper in debt, the father of four sets out to write and self-publish a book he hopes will revive his career.

One night, he hears the Irish housemaid tell his kids a folk tale about the awakening of spirits at Christmas. This instantly sparks an idea about the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. He brings to life characters that he meets in London, including a man at a cemetery that inspired him to create the character of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) while the character of Tiny Tim is based on his disabled nephew.

He then races to publish the book in six weeks, just in time for Christmas. His beloved book is titled A Christmas Carol.

The Star

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

When the Ebbing, Missouri Police Department is unable to solve her daughter Angela's murder, tough-as-nails Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) decides to make a bold move. She rents three billboards leading into the town and paints controversial messages on them pointing a finger at police chief William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) ineptness.

The billboards seem to get under the skin of several of the town's residents, but Mildred is plenty capable of taking them on. When the chief's second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

Wonder

Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) was born with a facial deformity and has had 27 surgeries in order to help him to breathe, see, and hear without a hearing aid, but he still looks different from other kids. He's been homeschooled up to now by his mother, Isabel (Julia Roberts), but now that he's 10, she's decided he should go to school with other children at the beginning of fifth grade. 

Before the school year begins, he's introduced to three kids — Jack Will (Noah Jupe), Julian (Bryce Gheisar) and Charlotte (Elle McKinnon) — who show him around school, but as time goes on, Julian quickly proves to be a bully, often making fun of Auggie. Meanwhile, Auggie's sister Via (Izabela Vidovic) is struggling with her own problems fitting in at high school, while Auggie's father (Owen Wilson) reassures his son that everyone has troubles.
